History of Vancouver Washington

 

 

An Overview of Vancouver’s History

For thousands of years, the Vancouver area was home to native people who flourished on the bounty of forest and river long before the house cleaning industry.

In May, 1792, American trader/sailor Robert Gray became the first non-native to enter the fabled “Great River of the West,” the Columbia River. Later that year, British Lt. William Broughton, serving under Capt. George Vancouver, explored 100 miles upriver. Along the way, he named a point of land along the shore in honor of his commander.

In 1806, American explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark camped near the Vancouver waterfront on the return leg of their famed western expedition. Lewis characterized the area as “the only desired situation for settlement west of the Rocky Mountains.”

In 1825, Dr. John McLoughlin decided to move the northwest headquarters of the Hudson’s Bay Company from Astoria to a more favorable setting upriver. He named the site after Point Vancouver on Broughton’s original map. Fort Vancouver was thus born.

For many years, Fort Vancouver was the center of all fur trading in the Pacific Northwest. It was also a center of British dominion over the Oregon Territory. In 1846, American control was extended north to the 49th parallel. The northwest became part of the United States.

In 1849, American troops arrived to establish Columbia (later Vancouver) Barracks. It served as military headquarters for much of the Pacific Northwest. The neighboring settlement was named “the City of Columbia.”

Finally, in 1857, the City of Vancouver was incorporated. Through the rest of the century, Vancouver steadily developed. In 1908, the first rail line east through the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge reached Vancouver. In 1910, a railroad bridge was opened south across the Columbia. In 1917, the Interstate Bridge was completed.

During World War I, the site later named Pearson Field was the location of the world’s largest spruce cut-up mill. It cut raw timber into the lumber used to build the planes which helped win the war in Europe. During World War II, Vancouver’s Kaiser Shipyard built a variety of craft that contributed greatly to America’s war effort.

Today, Vancouver is a community proud of its past with a keen eye toward a future rich with promise.

Vancouver Home Cleaning Tips: 15 Ways To Save Energy In Your Home

The Magic of Compost: Vancouver WA house Cleaning Tips Move Outdoors

Compost is basically the equivalent of the

good stuff in soil (humus) that sustains

plant life. It helps the soil retain moisture,

assists with the formation of good soil

structure and provides nutrients.

So much of what we send to landfill

consists of vegetation that could be used

in our garden. Around 200 pounds of

vegetable waste is thrown out by each

family, each year. Multiply that by millions

of families and that’s a lot of garbage that

has to be transported.

By setting up your own compost pile you’ll

not only be helping your garden, you’ll be

helping the planet in other ways.

Here are some simple things

you can do for more effective

composting.

- It’s important to get the right mix of

carbon and nitrogen materials in a

compost heap. The carbon based stuff is

mainly dry; things like newspaper, straw

and dry cuttings. The items rich in nitrogen

will mostly be wet – vegetable scraps and

lawn clippings. Ideal conditions are said

to be 1 part wet/green to 25 parts dry/

brown. You don’t have to be this fussy, but

an overly dry compost heap will take ages

to break down (been there) and one too

wet will start to smell (been there too). It

does take a bit of practice and a watchful

eye.

- Care needs to be taken when adding

lawn clippings. These are usually very

moist and rich in nitrogen. As they are so

wet, they’ll clump together, dispelling the

oxygen needed by the aerobic bacteria

and the pile will get quite smelly – a strong

ammonia type whiff due to anaerobic

decomposition. It’s best to mix clippings

in thoroughly with the pile, or spread the

lawn clippings out for a few days to dry a

little and then add them.

- Select a well drained area to establish

your pile; preferably over soil so that

worms can access it. The compost pile

should be in a sunny position in colder

climates or a shady area in warm climates

- A three sided pen will help to keep your

pile tidy. This can be made from star

droppers and strong mesh or pallets

nailed together.

- To speed up composting, break down

materials into smaller pieces or shred;

and turn the pile regularly

- The pile should always be warm or hot – if

you dig a small hole into the pile and put

your hand near it, you should feel it being

warmer than the air temperature. If it’s

cold, you need to add more green stuff.

- The pile should always be moist, but not

dripping. If it’s dry, spray water on the pile

and then work it through.                 

If you’re thinking of getting into

composting in a big way; there’s all

sorts of tools available such as bins set

in frames with a handle for turning. A

multiple bin/pile system is also useful so

you can stop with one pile at a certain

point and let that totally decompose while

adding fresh stuff to a new pile.

Things you can add to

compost piles

Newspaper, cardboard, eggshells,

vegetable scraps, law clippings, cuttings,

hair, manure from herbivores, leaves,

sawdust, coffee grounds and filters, tea

leaves – basically any plant material that

that’s not too thick.

Things to avoid

Dog and cat droppings, fish, meat and

dairy products, weeds, grease and oil.

The reason for avoiding most of these is

that there is a disease risk and rodents

and other animals may be attracted. I

have composted dog droppings before,

but basically in a bin of their own with

lawn clippings. It doesn’t smell all that

good during the early stages . If you do

compost pet droppings, don’t apply the

resulting compost to a veggie garden; just

to be safe

How To Grow Clean Air.  Vancouver WA Goes Green

There are things you can do to keep
environmental contaminants out of your
home. Houseplants are actually very
effective at reducing indoor air pollutants.
Plants can’t cure major indoor pollution
problems on their own; however, they
are an ideal antidote to the minor
contamination introduced into our indoor
environments through everyday household
products and building materials.

Plants produce oxygen, add precious
moisture and remove toxins from the air
through the tiny openings in their leaves.
In fact, as few as 15 houseplants in an
average-size home can offer a significant
reduction in the number of indoor
contaminants.

This is not just folklore. In the 70s, the
National Aeronautics and Space
Administration, faced with the task of
creating a life-support system for planned
moon bases, began extensive studies
on a fundamental question — just how
does the earth produce and sustain clean
air? The answer of course is through the
living processes of plants. Now, 30-plus
years later, we know a great deal about
the cleansing power of house plants. And
powerful they are. Just consider the indoor
air quality problems many commonly
available and beautiful houseplants can
help to remedy:

Formaldehyde: The Boston fern
(Nephrolepi exalta “Bostoniensis”), Florist’s
mums (Chrysanthemum morifolium), the
Gerbera daisy (Gerbera jamesonii) and
the Dwarf date palm (Phoenix roebelenii)
are all highly effective at reducing indoor
levels of formaldehyde, a contaminant
present in many household items (including
particleboard, carpet backings, some
grocery bags, facial tissues, paper towels
and permanent-press clothing) and
released by gas stoves.

Toluene/Xylene: Add an Areca palm
(Chrysalidocarpus lutescens), the Moth
orchid (Phalenopsis) and the Dwarf date
palm to your indoor greenery, all of which
are effective at removing xylene and
toluene, harmful volatile organic chemicals
which can be emitted from gasoline,
adhesives, ceiling tiles, computer screens,
paints, inks used in photocopiers, stains
and varnishes, and upholstery among other
common household products and materials.
And it’s not just our material things. Our
breath contains bioeffluents — such as
ethyl alcohol, acetone, methyl alcohol
and ethyl acetate — that also contribute
to poor indoor air quality, particularly in a
crowded classroom. The beautiful peace lily
is remarkably effective at addressing these
problems.

Other hardworking and beautiful
indoor plants include bamboo palm
(Chamaedorea), Chinese evergreen
(Aglaonema), English Ivy (Hedera helix),
the indoor dracaenas (Dracaena “Janet
Craig,” D. marginata, D. massangeana
and D. warnekii), and the snake plant
or mother-in-law’s tongue (Sansevieria
trifasciata laurentii).

When choosing houseplants, remember
that many (including some of those above)
can be toxic if ingested, so be extra careful
if you have young children or pets in your
home. Staff at the local garden center
should be able to advise you on nontoxic
choices; contact your local poison-control
center for guidance (the phone number is
listed in the front of your telephone book).
